What beach permit should a Shelter Island renter buy?

Shelter Island renters buy the same permits as any visitor: $35 a day, $90 a week, $170 a month or $325 for the season. A weekly permit beats three daily ones, a monthly permit beats two weekly ones, and the season beats two months.

1 or 2 days at the beachDaily$35 each
3 days or a weekWeekly$90
A month (31 days)Monthly$170
Two months (July and August)Seasonal$325

Three day permits cost $105, so a weekly permit at $90 is cheaper. Two weeklies cost $180, so a monthly permit at $170 is cheaper. Two months of monthly permits cost $340, so the $325 season is cheaper.

Where they apply

The Town restricts parking from May 15 to September 15 at ten beaches, landings and ramps, listed on the Shelter Island permit page: Wade’s Beach, Menhaden Lane, Shell Beach, Peconic Avenue, Crescent Beach, Fresh Pond, Reel Point, Bootlegger’s Alley, Daniel Lord Road and Hiberry Lane. One-day permits are limited per location and valid only for the date and place you pick. Crescent Beach day permits are weekends only.

Buying

The Town Clerk at 38 North Ferry Road sells weekly, monthly and seasonal permits. Daily permits are digital through ParkMobile. You do not need a day permit if you hold any valid resident, weekly, monthly or seasonal permit.

See Wade’s Beach and Crescent Beach for the two bathing beaches.

Common questions

Do renters qualify for the free resident permit?

The Town's page offers free permits to residents and says visitors and guests who do not qualify for one can buy daily, weekly, monthly or seasonal permits. Ask the Town Clerk at (631) 749-1166 whether your lease qualifies.

Is a season permit worth it for two months?

Usually. Two monthly permits cost $340, which is more than the $325 seasonal permit that runs from May 15 to September 15.
